Mr Summerton graduated from Leicester Medical School and undertook his general surgical and urological training in Plymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth.
He obtained Reconstructive Fellowships in the USA and at the Institute of Urology in London, with a further Fellowship in advanced andrological surgery, including prosthetics and female to male gender realignment also at the Institute of Urology.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2001 in Portsmouth, he moved to Leicester in 2005 on leaving the Royal Navy after 19 years of service.
His special clinical interests are Reconstructive urology, in particular urethral reconstruction and surgical andrology - including penile cancer, implant surgery and gender realignment. Leicester is currently one of the largest penile cancer supraregional centres in the UK.
He sits on the British Association of urological Surgeons (BAUS) Andrology Executive Committee (since 2006), BAUS Council (since 2008), is Chairman of the East Midlands Urology Society (EMUS), Chairman of the East Midlands Regional Training Committee in Urology, Chairman of the East Midlands Penile cancer Supra-network (6.5 million population), a co-director of the British Association of Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons (BAGURS), a member of the American Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Society (GURS), is the Royal College of Surgeons of England Regional Speciality Representative (RSPA) in Urology, sits on the East Midlands Professional Affairs Board and the Nuffield Hospital Medical Advisory Committee. He is Chair of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines Panel in Urological Trauma, and Examiner in the Medical School at Leicester and Nationally at FRCS(Urol).
