I completed my medical qualification in Sheffield before training as an orthopaedic surgeon in Oxford and Leicester. I undertook research in Oxford and a fellowship in paediatric orthopaedics at The Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street, London.
My main interests are in hip and foot surgery in children and adults, and I also undertake complex pelvic surgery and foot reconstruction across a wide age range. I have a particular interest in young adults with hip arthritis and uncemented hip replacement. I try to help patients make the right decisions on their treatment, by explaining the options available and their outcomes, based on the available evidence and experience over 18 years as a consultant.
For several years I have had an interest in the training of the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons, becoming Training Programme Director for Orthopaedics in South Trent and then being appointed to the national Speciality Advisory Committee. I am particularly proud to be voted regional orthopaedic trainer of the year in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and a runner–up for national orthopaedic trainer in 2010.
