Mr Avery is Head of the Leicester Maxillofacial research group and Chairman of the Head & Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary team in Leicester. The team have strong research links with the Molecular Oncology and Engineering departments at the University of Leicester and in Budapest. There are a number of clinical and basic science research students studying for a higher degree. Mr Avery is a member of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Research Trainers Group and Regional Head & Neck oncology lead for the National Institute of Health Research, UK.
As a result of his strong research interests, Mr Avery has published over 80 papers in peer reviewed journals and a number of book chapters. Mr Avery’s main areas of research include:
- oral cancer
- facial reconstruction techniques
- finite element analysis and bioengineering
- facial trauma
- management of salivary gland tumours
His research team also present work at surgical meetings and Leicester is currently a UK “hotspot” for Maxillofacial presentations and publications
