Dr Riyaz Somani was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at the Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, in December 2014. He specialises in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorders) and in complex pacing.
Dr Somani qualified from the University of Leeds in 1998 and subsequently undertook specialist cardiology training at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds. He obtained a PhD from the University of Leeds in 2011 after a period of dedicated research in the field of cardiology. More recently, Dr Somani has specialised in the field of interventional cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy having successfully completed a two year fellowship (Diploma) at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada where he received extensive training in the management of patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
Dr Somani's specific areas of interest are: palpitations and heart rhythm disorders, radiofrequency ablation procedures, atrial fibrillation ablation, ventricular tachycardia ablation, pacemaker implantation, defibrillator implantation, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (biventricular pacing) for heart failure and the assessment of sudden cardiac death risk.
