I am a general gastroenterologist with specific interests in endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease. I am experienced in the diagnosis and management of all common gastrointestinal (GI) disorders including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastro-oesophageal reflux, coeliac and Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis and all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.

I have been a consultant gastroenterologist in Leicester since 1998. I specialise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and am an advanced colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. I established the Leicester Endoscopy Training Centre in 2004 and teach basic and advanced endoscopic skills to trainees and consultants from around the UK. I recently established Leicester as an accreditation centre and examine endoscopists on behalf of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. I am lead clinician for inflammatory bowel disease.

I have a major interest in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy regularly performing large numbers of procedures every year. For example, in 2014 in my NHS practice I supervised or performed 1471 endoscopic procedures (544 upper, 307 Colons and 620 flexible sigmoidoscopies).

In addition I annually perform more than 250 colonoscopies on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme where key performance indicators (KPI) are independently assessed. My completion rate (97.5 v 90%), mean withdrawal time (12 v 6 mins) and polyp retrieval (96.9 v 90%) all exceed national standards. More than 90% of my patients experience no or only mild/moderate pain. Detection of polyps (ADR) is the most clinically relevant measure of high quality endoscopy since it is associated with a low rate of future cancer. My ADR last year was 53.6%; this significantly exceeds the national target of 40%.

I am Director of the University of Leicester Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. In 2004 I established the Leicester Endoscopy Training Centre. I continue to teach on basic and advanced endoscopy courses and am an invited faculty member at the National Endoscopy Training Centre in St Marks Hospital, London.

I am honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester.

In the last few years I have received funding from the British Society of Gastroenterology and the Midlands Gastroenterology Society to establish links with a hospital in Accra, Ghana, on the Ghana Endoscopy Project. In our two visits to date, we have run basic endoscopy courses for both doctors and nurses to improve the quality of endoscopy. We are training some of their more senior doctors in advanced techniques and are establishing a formal training programme for the trainees.

Professional leadership

I am Clinical Director of the University of Leicester Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. In this role, I am responsible for overseeing flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy screening for the population of Leicestershire.

Osteoporosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

I have two children who are both at university. Although I no longer play, I am a rugby enthusiast and Leicester Tigers fan. I still enjoy keeping fit by cycling, running and regular dog walks. Other interests include sailing, skiing and socialising with friends. One day I will have the time to take up golf and learn how to fly fish.
