Leeds North East Labour MP and Shadow Foreign Minister, Fabian Hamilton, visited Spire Leeds Hospital in Roundhay on Friday June 3, 2016 to meet the hospital’s team, discuss the challenges of healthcare and hear about the benefits which the community is seeing as a result of the hospital’s sustained financial investment programme.
He was given a tour of the Hospital by Suzanne Wynne-Jones, business development manager and Rachel Balmforth, matron at Spire Leeds Hospital, to see some of the latest developments. These included a visit to the newly–equipped X-ray suite, which has been fitted with digital X-ray equipment following a £250,000 investment. When compared to the previous system of producing film X-rays, the digital X-ray units can produce X-rays quicker whilst also enhancing image quality, producing X-rays of larger areas of the body and reducing patients’ radiation exposure.
Next on the tour was the new children’s ward where he heard about the specialist care the hospital offers to children and their families. Spire Leeds is the only private hospital in Leeds undertaking surgery on children under the age of 3 and works with 30 consultant paediatric surgeons, anaesthetists and physicians. The MP also visited the Hospital’s chemotherapy unit where he met the specialist oncology nursing team and spoke to patients.
Rachel Balmforth said, “It was really useful to be able to show Mr Hamilton the latest developments and to discuss our success as both a healthcare business and a local employer. He learned about how we work with both private insurers and the NHS to provide the highest standards of clinical care for our patients."
Spire Hospital is one of the region’s longest established private hospitals. Since opening in 1989 it has treated over one million patients from Leeds, Harrogate, York and the surrounding areas. Employing 354 staff, the Hospital works in partnership with more than 350 specialist consultant surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists and radiologists to provide an extensive range of surgical and medical services. The hospital provides NHS treatment in a number of specialties.
The Labour Party politician, Fabian Hamilton, has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds North East since 1997. In January 2016 he was appointed Shadow Minister (Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs).
