Edel McNamara talks about being a Scrub Nurse in Theatre at Spire Regency Hospital:
What first attracted me to work for Spire was the variety of surgeries offered, from diagnostic and routine investigations to more complex surgery. I've been working here since July 2012, and before this I worked for 3 years in a public hospital in Ireland and nursed with an agency in Australia whilst taking a year out to travel.
When I joined Spire Regency Hospital initilally I scrubbed mostly for orthopaedic surgeries, but now I scrub for a wide range of surgeries including general, ENT, urology and plastics. The range of specialities has allowed me to develop new skills in areas like cosmetic and weight-loss surgery, which I previously wouldn't have had much experience. My primary role is that of scrubbing, but I also circulate for cases and ensure that all documents relating to these cases are completed accurately.
It's a smaller theatre department and a smaller team than the ones i'd worked in previously. I was assigned a 'buddy' when I started, which was a good way of introducing me to the team. It's a close knit team which I think contributes to the hospital's ongoing development, because everyone is very approachable and willing to share their expertise. If I've any concerns I know I will get guidance and support from my colleagues. I enjoy being part of a successful happy team. I'm developing new skills and broadening my knowledge of different surgeries. The online training available also helps my professional development.
