Brian Wilkinson talks about being the Catering Manager at Spire Manchester Hospital.
We are working on people being autonomous and bringing ideas that strengthen what we do
"I joined Spire Healthcare in April 2012 after 12 years of running my own event catering company. I trained as a chef at Salford college and joined The Trust house forte group as a Larder chef, I spent the next 4 years learning my trade in a very busy environment. After leaving the hotel trade I started a career in industrial catering with Compass uk and progressed through to senior catering manager.
My role within Spire Healthcare is based around ensuring we get quality food and service to patients and staff within a pre-determined budget. The most rewarding part of the job is ensuring the food we offer is of a good standard and meets the patient and staff needs.
The challenges are ensuring we operate as a strong team and support each member of staff. This enables us to deliver a steady service with continuity.
The team is getting stronger and we are working on people being autonomous and bringing ideas that strengthen what we do. I help the team develop by ensuring the correct training and support is given at all times, and by ensuring they have the skills and confidence to carry out their role. When looking for a new team member we look for commitment to service and quality, a person with self-pride and enthusiasm."
