For our last clinical workshop of 2013, we have brought together four key consultants to share their expertise and experience.
Within this workshop the consultants will discuss assessment, diagnosis and treatment of common problems in primary care with shoulders, hands, knees and feet.
Mr Ali Al-Sabti, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon
Shoulder conditions in general practice – assessment and treatment
Mr Al-Sabti will discuss the importance of shoulder assessment, pitfalls to avoid and how to differentiate between neck conditions and shoulder pain. He will also advise on how a number of shoulder conditions can be treated safely in general practice in a variety of conservative ways, including injection and physiotherapy. Injection techniques will also be covered in in this session.
Mr Iain Lennox, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon
Early arthritis tendon and ligament injuries of the knee and ankle
Mr Lennox will discuss treatment of osteochondral lesions with keyhole surgery. He will also cover reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament with keyhole surgery and diagnosis and treatment of shin splints and ankle instability.
Mr Harbhajan Singh Plaha, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon
Don’t put your foot in it!
In this session, Mr Plaha will talk about the diagnosis and management of common foot problems. He will also advise on diagnosis of painful foot conditions, what can be treated in surgery and conditions that need onward referral to secondary care.
Mr Manu Sood, Consultant plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon
Common hand injuries in general practice
Mr Sood will discuss common hand injuries such as fingertip injuries and amputations, common hand fractures, mallet injury, tendon injuries and injuries to the digital nerves.He will discuss examination and investigation of these injuries and decision-making with regard to conservative management in primary care. He will also discuss indications for referral to secondary care and illustrate decision-making with clinical case scenarios and x-rays.
