Your consultations

All your consultations will take place in an accessible private room, so don’t worry if you have pain when walking. During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need blood tests, an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so they can examine your hip in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called prosthetics – as well as the surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you and your consultant have decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for four to five days. You’ll have one of our 38 bright private rooms.

Here’s what will happen once you arrive at Spire Hartswood for your hip replacement operation:

  • You’ll meet your consultant and anaesthetist
  • You'll have either a general anaesthetic, where you’re unconscious, or an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, where you're numb from the waist down
  • If you have an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, your anaesthetist can also give you a sedative to help you relax
  • Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint

The hip replacement procedure usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half. For more information about the operation, head to our main hip replacement surgery page.
