I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood offering private spinal surgery and neurosurgery in their clean and comfortable hospital.

Back pain and neck pain are extremely common and can be so severe as to wreak havoc with many aspects of both personal and professional life. Careful assessment can identify the treatment that will be of most benefit to each patient. I have expertise in a range of back and neck operations, including cervical disc replacement and minimally invasive techniques (keyhole surgery) for the decompression of spinal cord and nerve roots in degenerative disease of the spine (spondylosis)  and treatment of benign and malignant tumours. I always take an evidence-based approach.

I also undertake many cranial surgery procedures for brain injury, hydrocephalus and brain tumours. The driving force for my brain tumour work is to cure benign tumours and to give quality of life to patients with malignant tumours.

I have been head of the department of neurosurgery at Queen’s Hospital Romford since April 2015. The team has grown under my leadership, and we have developed operating at the King George’s Site which has really helped through the Covid pandemic. I undertake a large volume of surgical procedures for neurovascular conditions (aneurysms, AVM, cavernoma), brain tumours, hydrocephalus and degenerative conditions of the spine. All of these are undertaken through an evidence-based approach with MDT and governance procedures ensuring the highest quality and safety.

When seeing me at Spire Hartswood, patients can expect to receive a careful assessment and discussion of all treatment options in lay terms. They will be guided to the optimum management plan catering to their specific individual needs. I qualified as a doctor from Cambridge University in 1993. Following basic surgical training in London I spent eight years in Newcastle as a specialist registrar in neurosurgery. In this period I gained experience across the full range of neurosurgical procedures and also undertook research. In 2006 I became a consultant neurosurgeon at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, Essex, moving to Queen's Hospital, Romford later that year.

I have been elected as President of the British Neurovascular Group. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with the development of services at a National level.

My personal interest in fitness (participating in triathlons, marathons, and a keen tennis player) gives valuable insight into many of the exercises useful for patients suffering with back pain. I am also an enthusiastic violinist, playing for Brentwood Philharmonic Orchestra. I have raised money through running and triathlon for Breast Cancer Now and a number of other charities. Prevention is clearly better than cure, and I endorse the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, while being committed to supporting research to identify new technologies to help those people in need.
