Background Information
Professional profile:

Dr Maniyar is a consultant neurologist who has a great deal of experience dealing with all types of neurological problems. He completed his basic medical training and a post-graduate degree in General Medicine and Research (MD) from Shivaji University, Maharashtra, India. He migrated to the UK in 2003 where he successfully completed medical training culminating in MRCP, following which he was awarded a National Training Number in Neurology which he completed in December 2012.
He has a special interest in headache disorders, having completed a research fellowship at the prestigious Headache Centre at UCSF (University Of California, San Francisco), California, USA under Professor Peter Goadsby. He has newly started a specialist headache clinic at Basildon Hospital in Essex for the NHS and is in the process of starting similar services at The Royal London Hospital for patients affected by these common and often disabling symptoms. About 50-60% of his patients on the NHS are refractory headaches referred by his neurology consultant colleagues.
He treats all types of headache and facial pain including but not restricted to migraine, chronic migraine, tension-type headache, medication overuse headache, cluster headache, as well as rare types of headache including other TACS (trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias), hypnic headache, headaches due to high or low intracranial pressure and cough headache.
At Spire Hartswood Hospital, he will typically take a thorough history of your symptoms, followed by a comprehensive examination and relevant tests if indicated. The vast majority of headache disorders can be diagnosed on the basis of a thorough history although tests like an MRI scan can be carried out to rule out alternative pathologies. Each individual patient will get a personalised management plan to deal with their symptoms and typically this will be done after a thorough discussion. Treatment options include acute treatment, chronic preventive treatment, interventions including greater occipital nerve injections and Botulinum toxin injections (Botox), and infusions that can be carried out as a day-case or in-patient. Dr Maniyar believes that most headache problems, however severe or chronic, can be successfully managed.
His research interest is using functional imaging modalities like positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to understand brain function in relation to headache. Most of his work is recent and under publication. He has written reviews on functional imaging in migraine, case reports, comments and book chapters (oxford university press) and is frequently asked to review scientific articles on the topic of headache by international peer-reviewed journals. His recent invited lectures include Royal Society of Medicine London, Migraine Trust and British Association for Society of Headaches (BASH).
His research in the premonitory phase of migraine (symptoms that start before headache) has been widely acclaimed and recently awarded the Harold G. Wolff Lecture Award by the American Headache Society, considered to be the one of the most prestigious awards internationally in headache research. His other awards include the ‘Best Scientific Presentation’ at the European Headache and Migraine Trust International Congress (EHMTIC) 2012 and ‘Commendation Award’ for outstanding research in headache by the International Headache Society.
His vision is to develop, establish and improvise on specialist headache services and continue with research to find solutions for these common and disabling clinical conditions.
