Sleep apnoea clinic by Mr Kotecha
This new clinic is aimed at people who suffer from disrupted sleep due to Sleep Apnoea.
The clinic is run by Spire Hartswood Hospital and Mr Bhik Kotecha (Consultant ENT surgeon) offers patients tests to see whether or not they have true sleep apnoea. If the tests diagnose severe sleep apnoea, the patient will be referred for therapy known as CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). This is an appropriate and recommended form of treatment for the condition.
To be referred to the service, patients are required to have a GP referral letter to a Spire Hartswood Hospital ENT Surgeon. Appointments can be made by calling our advisors on 01277 266 766.
What is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is when your breathing stops for short periods while you sleep. These periods can last ten seconds or longer, and occur when the muscles in your throat, tongue or roof of the mouth (soft palate) relax, temporarily closing the airways. Breathing re-starts when the brain detects that you have stopped breathing and briefly wakes you up, so re-opening your airway. This process can be repeated several times during the night. This can result in insufficient good quality sleep leading to severe fatigue and tiredness.
People whose snoring is causing significant relationship problems or those with daytime drowsiness could find significant benefits from treatment.
Sleep apnoea problems are also associated with obstruction in the throat such as enlarged tonsils or nasal blockages. People who are overweight can also suffer from sleep apnoea.
