Mr Stephen Burrell was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Luton & Dunstable Hospital in 2000. He trained in London at Queen Charlottes and UCH and has dual postgraduate qualifications with both MRCP and MRCOG.
Mr Burrell has special interests in treating heavy periods and pelvic pain and has specific skills in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. He offers conservative treatments for heavy periods as well as the latest advances in endometrial ablation. He performs hysterectomy when other options are not suitable & has undergone specific training to enable him to perform this laparoscopically in addition to the more traditional abdominal and vaginal methods.
Mr Burrell has a particular interest in the management of endometriosis which can cause pain and subfertility. Laparoscopy provides a definitive diagnosis and allows laser treatment thereby relieving symptoms & enabling a faster recovery than other surgery methods. He says it is very rewarding seeing women who have benefited from such surgery
Mr Burrell runs a high quality ultrasound scanning service, performing both gynaecology and pregnancy scans.
Mr Burrell has lectured at scientific meetings in the UK and abroad and has been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer. Since 2009 he has been part of the Council of the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy and runs a National Course for the Royal College for hysteroscopy.
