    Investigation and treatment of medical diseases affecting the gullet, stomach and small bowel including dysphagia, dyspepsia, Barrett's oesophagus, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, Coeliac disease (Celiac disease / gluten sensitivity and enteropathy), malabsorption and weight loss.

     Diseases of the colon including colon polyps, colon cancer, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS / functional bowel disorder), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Colitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticular disease and diverticulitis.

    Investigation and treatment of liver diseases, gallstones, biliary disease, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer.

    Investigation and treatment of diseases with Gastro-intestinal endoscopy:

    Upper GI procedures - oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD), enteroscopy, balloon enteroscopy, banding of varices, dilation of strictures, surveillance of Barrett’s oesophagus, dye spray.

    Lower GI procedures - colonoscopy, polyp removal, dilation of strictures, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) balloon enteroscopy, surveillance for and early detection of colon cancer, dye spray surveillance of ulcerative colitis).

    Background Information 
    Professional profile:

    Dr Mead studied at University College London gaining distinction in his final examination. He was awarded prizes in general academic study, pharmacology and medicine.

     He initially worked in the Professorial hepatology and gastroenterology unit at the Royal Free Hospital before moving closer to his family in Dorset and Hampshire. Whilst training as a specialist gastroenterologist he spent 6 years in 4 national centres of excellence, including Southampton University and Cambridge University hospitals. He researched into the early detection of and surveillance for oesophageal and colorectal cancers becoming an academic Doctor of Medicine in 2013. In the last year before taking up his Consultant post in the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust he practiced at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge, focusing on endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and diarrhoeal illnesses.

     Endoscopy has been a long held interest of his, with fellowships in Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth, a national centre of excellence and in Tokyo Japan, a world centre of endoscopic excellence. He has published on endoscopic techniques aimed at improving the quality and comfort of procedures in the upper and lower gut.

     He is responsible for teaching endoscopy to Gastroenterology trainees and has been a faculty member and lecturer on courses teaching advanced endoscopic techniques.

    Personal profile:

    Dr Mead is a life long learner with three degrees so far and another one underway in education. He uses this knowledge in his practice and his approach to work and life.

     Dr Mead has been a keen sportman playing rugby and cricket, and sailing for many years. He now spends his weekends with family, often watching and coaching his three children playing their rugby, cricket and whilst they sail.
