Spire Harpenden Hospital now offers a treatment for patients suffering from wet age related macular degeneration (AMD), including the newest therapeutic interventions. The clinic is led by Mr Jiten Tolia, Consultant Ophthalmologist.
This condition is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels within the retina leading to a build up of fluid, bleeding and scarring. As a result, we t age related macular degeneration can cause serious visual loss. Patients can now benefit from this new treatment which involves an injection of a drug to control the build up of fluid under the retina.
Typically, a course of treatment is necessary, with repeated injections every four to six weeks. The number of injections required varies from patient to patient. Most will need three injections initially followed by a period of observation and further injections as required. The procedure is usually performed as a day case under local anaesthaesia.
Early recognition and treatment of wet AMD is important to preserve visual function. Diagnosis is confirmed by fluorescein angiography, and at Spire Harpenden Hospital we can offer quick access to treatment.
