Professional profile:

Professor Sanjiv Jari is a consultant lower limb and orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon at Hope Hospital (University of Manchester Teaching Hospital) and at The Manchester Sports Medicine Clinic. He is also an honorary clinical lecturer in orthopaedic and trauma surgery at the University of Manchester.

Professor Jari trained in London and Manchester, following which he worked in the USA for a year at a prestigious sports medicine clinic treating, amongst other things, injuries in elite and professional athletes. Professor Jari is a member of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association (BOSTA) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He was a sports medicine consultant to the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and also provided cover to the 2001 World Police and Fire Games in Indianapolis. He was a medical consultant to the USA amateur boxing association and is the orthopaedic surgeon to the Great British Olympic Wrestling squad.

Professor Jari's NHS practice involves lower limb and trauma surgery. He has set-up a dedicated knee rehabilitation and triage service in conjunction with specialist therapists, which includes biomechanical ligament assessment using a KT-1000, a tool not generally available in the UK.  His interests include keyhole surgery of the knee and ankle, ligament reconstructive knee surgery, cartilage transplantation in sports injuries and early arthritis and knee-cap surgery. In addition to sports surgery, he has a large practice in arthritis surgery and specialises in minimally invasive total and half knee replacements. Professor Jari is a national and international speaker on knee surgery and sports injuries. He has a number of ongoing research studies in various aspects of lower limb surgery. His research commitment has included supervision of post-graduate doctors undertaking higher degrees.

Professor Jari looks after and works with many elite professional and international teams and athletes in various sports including rugby, football, netball and basketball. 

 Last year Professor Jari completed 220 Total Knee Replacements, 190 ACL Reconstructions, 450 Arthroscopies of knees and ankles, 15 Cartilage Transplantation, 25 Unicompartmental Knee Replacements and 20 Patella Re-alignments.

Personal profile:

Being a keen sportsman, Professor Jari has played a number of sports and has played basketball and hockey  to a high level. However, a number of personal injuries have led to his interest into sport injury medicine and rehabilitation.
