Mr Simon Monkhouse

Consultant bariatric surgeon Mr SImon Monkhouse provides the full range of bariatric surgery at Spire Gatwick Park, including gastric balloons, gastric bands, gastric bypasses and sleeve gastrectomies. He works as part of the multidisciplinary team so that all patients are fully assessed, educated and cared for before and after surgery.

Mr Monkhouse studied at the University of Cambridge and achieved the top 1st in his year (Downing College Senior Whitby Scholarship 1997). He trained in busy bariatric units in Bristol, Taunton and Newcastle and did a dedicated fellowship in this field of surgery. He has been published in international literature and regularly presents at specialist meetings. Mr Monkhouse’s top priority is patient safety and he has set up a number of national initiatives to look after patients in the long term going through weight loss surgery. Patient experience is very important and he collects feedback on in order to be responsive and constantly aim to exceed expectations. All his operative data is anonymously entered onto the national database so that our service remains transparent. Mr Monkhouse is proud of the team and exceptionally proud of their results.

Kay was appointed as Bariatric Nurse Specialist in August 2009 at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital. She has attended frequent study days to continually update her skills and development in this field, including Advanced Management of the Gastric Band, held at the Royal College of Surgeons in 2012.

She has extensive experience with gastric band patients as well as with bypass and sleeve surgeries. She is passionate about, and committed to, providing holistic care to our patients, supporting and advising them. She developed pre-operative education in 2010 and this concept is now being advocated nationally for weight loss surgery.

Kay sees her role as one of “walking with patients” along their weight loss journey, being there from the beginning, getting to know them well, supporting them all the way.  She coordinates appointments with the rest of the MDT, is the “go-to” person for our patients, runs the support group, and provides that continuity of care which is part of our personal and personable service.

Kay qualified as a State Registered Nurse (with honours) at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas’s Hospital in London in July 1982. She has worked as a Practice Nurse, Night Sister, Out-patient Clinical Lead and Pre-assessment Lead amongst others.
