Dr Azhar Ansari is a consultant gastroenterologist at Spire Gatwick Park private hospital in Horley, Surrey offering private appointments to patients in Surrey and Sussex in our clean and comfortable private hospital.
Dr Ansari previously worked at St Thomas’ before moving to East Surrey Hospital to become the lead clinician for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Dr Azhar Ansari's main interests are in complex inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopy, nutrition and research. He also provides General Gastroenterology and General Medical services. His aim is to provide high quality medical care founded on his experience, training and research activity.
Dr Ansari has done extensive research in the field of pharmacogenetics, immunosuppression and stem cell transplantation for Crohn’s disease. His research was done with a personal award of over £200,000 from the trustees of Guy’s and St Thomas’. This has helped to set up the successful research unit in personalised medicine at the Purine laboratory in St Thomas’. This scientific work translates to individualised treatment for patients receiving immunosuppressives and their subsequent monitoring to optimise safety and outcomes to treatment.
Dr Azhar Ansari is a core member of the thiopurine task force (World Congress of Gastroenterology), an advisor for several of the pharmaceutical firms and a member of several regional committees for high cost drugs such as infliximab and adalimubab.
Endoscopy remains a core of Dr Ansari’s activity and includes endoscopic treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), strictures and polyps. Dr Ansari also has experience as a Consultant in Complex Nutrition at Guy’s and St Thomas’ which included providing a total parenteral nutritional service for transplantation, haematological and head and neck cancers.
