Tattoo Removal
Tattoos are increasingly found in a wide variety of people in a wide variety of sites within the body. They are no longer the preserve of young men who wish to decorate their forearms. Both men and women of all ages have become more creative in the types of tattoos that they have as well as the sites in which they have them. However from time to time people regret their decision to have a tattoo.
Sarah had a tattoo on her left ankle for a few years before she decided that it was no longer wished to have in such an obvious area. She came to see Mr Dheansa to discuss the various options for its removal. Although she was told that ruby laser treatment was likely to give a good result she was reluctant to have up to 12 to 18 treatments based a month apart to have it removed. Sarah was also aware that such treatment would significantly reduce the pigment in the area and knew that it would take some time for this to return.
In view of this, staged surgical excision was discussed and this surgery was performed under local anaesthetic with a few months between each stage. After each surgery, there was a significant reduction in the area of the tattoo. Sarah healed very well and her final result was a fine line scar with only a mild contour change to the skin of her ankle. Overall, the appearance of the skin is excellent and Sarah is pleased with the quality of the scar.
An increasing number of people are deciding that they would not like to have their tattoos permanently. Although there are a wide range of treatment options available to them, in those people that wish to address their concern rapidly, surgery is an effective option and if planned appropriately, can result in an excellent appearance, although there will always be a residual scar. It is always important to understand that even surgery may require a staged approach and there may need to be a few months between each treatment. It is essential therefore to plan well in advance if a special occasion is on the horizon to make sure enough time is given for the tissues to settle down before the big day.
