Mr Andrew Yelland took up his post as lead consultant in breast surgery at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in December 1996. He qualified from St George's Hospital in 1986 and subsequently trained on the South Thames (West) rotation at all grades; during which time he gained the FRCS.

Between 1990 and 1991 he undertook a period of scientific research at Charing Cross Hospital and investigated the role of growth factors in breast cancer. This work led to the award of an MS degree. Scientific research remains one of his interests.

Mr Yelland has worked on several breast units including those at St George's, The Royal Surrey County (Guildford) and Royal Marsden Hospitals.

Another interest led to a period of specialist study into breast reconstruction at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, USA. The unit in Atlanta pioneered the TRAM flap in the 1980's and more recently endoscopic plastic surgical techniques. This increased Mr Yelland's interest in related cosmetic procedures, and he has now performed over 1000 cosmetic breast procedures.
