Spire Gatwick Park Hospital wins award for most outstanding student nurse placement

Spire Gatwick Park Hospital is the proud recipient of the most outstanding placement of 2007, voted for by the students and staff of the University of Surrey.

The award was given to Gatwick Park hospital following a review and reorganisation of Student Nurse placements at Gatwick Park by Lynn Martin and Ros Waters.  The routine annual audit from the University of Surrey threw up the opportunity to look at the placement system as it was at the hospital and take more control of the whole process.

‘Lynn and I looked at the student’s journey through their placement and identified gaps in the current system.  We discovered that no one took overall control of the organisation and running of placements and students did not have structure and continuity.’ said Ros.

An induction checklist similar to that given to a new employee was devised to ensure that the students had all the information they required to fully participate in the day to day hospital routine, and they are given an orientation tour on the first day when they are introduced to all members of the multi disciplinary team.  They continue to rotate through the hospital during their placement to ensure that they experience all of the departments under close supervision.

There are now several ex-students working at Gatwick Park as Health Care Assistants whilst they complete their training which is a major recommendation for the hospital as a very popular and sought after employer of nurses in the South East.
