Cognitive disorder (memory) clinic update

The cognitive disorders (memory) clinic was established by Dr Pandita-Gunawardena, Consultant Physician, at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital 5 years ago.  The clinic is very busy as it is one of very few private clinics available of its kind in the UK.

‘We see all types of patients with memory deterioration, from the early stages right through to more advanced disease’ said Dr Pandita Gunawardena.

‘It is especially reassuring for people with very early memory deterioration seeking a diagnosis, as we can fully assess them and begin to treat where necessary.’

A complete clinical assessment is carried out including specific memory tests.  Relevant laboratory investigations are done, including blood tests, ECG and brain scan to arrive at a diagnosis and/or to exclude a reversible cause for the memory problems.  The patient then returns to the clinic and the treatment options discussed.  Management includes advice on changes of lifestyle as well as treatment with specific anti-dementia medications where appropriate.

The follow up is ongoing with further consultations with Dr. Pandita, usually at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, but occasionally at the patients’ home if required. Close family and carers are encouraged to accompany the patient and will also be given relevant information and advice.
