In 2006 Spire were the first private hospital group to publish clinical performance and health improvement measures on the web, including information on MRSA blood infection and Clostridium Difficile.

 

Research and Innovation

Spire Healthcare supports ethically approved clinical research. Clinical research at Spire hospitals contributes to the introduction of innovative new treatments. It helps to:

  • Ensure patients receive the best treatment available to them
  • Develop our understanding of disease and the human body
  • Create information on new and existing treatments

 

Research supported by Spire Healthcare:

  • Identifying the information that helps patients choose the hospital they would prefer for treatment
  • Introducing new implants that can be used to treat spinal disease
  • Introducing new drugs to treat Arthritis, Head and Neck cancer, Prostate cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Acromegaly
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of screening for osteoporosis in older women
  • Identifying the causes of skin inflammation
  • The use of an omega 3 fish oil before surgery for liver cancer
  • Using extra local anaesthetic injections to control pain following anterior cruciate ligament repair
  • National comparative audit of blood transfusion
  • National Confidential Enquiries into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD)
  • National Joint Registry (NJR) which collects information on all hip and knee replacement operations
  • Health Protection Agency (HPA) surveillance for hip and knee replacement operations
  • National Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction Audit
  • National elective surgery: patient reported outcome measures (four operations) for NHS patients
