    Professional profile:
    I qualified from Liverpool University School of Medicine in 1980 and then underwent post-graduate training in a wide range of medical specialties and geriatric medicine. I spent eighteen months working on the Mersey Regional Renal Unit and Renal Transplant Unit. After passing MRCP I spent three years in Professor Anthony Barnett's department in Birmingham researching and writing my MD thesis on aspects of diabetic nephropathy and its treatment. I subsequently joined the West Midlands training scheme for geriatric and general medicine. During this time I gained wide experience in all aspects of care of the elderly and helped to design and establish an orthogeriatric service at the Birmingham Accident Hospital. Whilst working as a senior registrar I also ran a rehabilitation unit for younger patients and passed my Diploma in Rehabilitation Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London.

    I was appointed consultant physician in care of the elderly with an interest in rehabilitation in 1994. I became a general physician with an interest in care of the elderly when the departments of Medicine for Care of the Elderly and General Medicine merged in 1995 and for several years ran a diabetic clinic.

    I am currently the lead clinician for stroke medicine in the Blackpool hospitals and run the acute stroke unit and the Gloucester unit for rehabilitation at Clifton Hospital.
