I graduated with honours from Sheffield University Medical School in 2001. After a period of surgical training in Sheffield, I moved to West Yorkshire and was appointed to the Yorkshire Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Programme based out of Leeds. I obtained my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr & Orth) examination on my first attempt in 2011 and was admitted onto the Specialist Register in 2013. At the end of my general orthopaedic training in Yorkshire, I undertook a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine, gaining in depth knowledge about the athlete and best treatments for their injuries. This earned me the qualification DipSEM(UK).
During 2013 I lived in Annecy in the French Alps and undertook a 12 month period of specialist training (fellowship) with world-renowned surgeon, Dr Laurent Lafosse. There I learnt first-hand the best and most modern techniques to treat shoulder and elbow problems. Whilst in France I also spent time with Dr Gilles Walch in Lyon, who is widely regarded as the modern-day master of the open Latarjet procedure. Further upper limb experience was gained when I spent a month in Boston with Dr JP Warner at Massachusetts General Hospital. MGH was voted the number one hospital facility in the United States in 2012 by the U.S. News & World Report. Dr JP Warner is a shoulder specialist focussing particularly on revision (second time) joint replacement and tendon/muscle transfers for rotator cuff deficiencies. On returning to the UK, I benefitted greatly from working in Leeds as Fellow to Mr Roger Hackney, Consultant Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Surgeon.
I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in June 2014. There I had a general trauma practice but on the planned care side I offer a comprehensive shoulder and elbow service. I adopt a pragmatic approach to problem solving, tailor the solution to the individual and ensure the patient understands and can influence their treatment journey wherever possible. I am keen to explore all options regarding a patient’s treatment, offering both non-operative and operative therapies where appropriate. My elective practice includes all arthroplasty (joint replacement) and arthroscopy (key-hole) surgery to the shoulder and elbow. In particular I offer both anatomic (traditional) and reverse polarity shoulder replacements. On the arthroscopic side I am a specialist in rotator cuff surgery and instability treatments, including the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure. I also offer open surgery for conditions around the elbow such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and ulnar nerve entrapment.
I was invited as faculty on many regional and national courses and am involved in the training of trainee surgeons in the Yorkshire region. I am actively involved in audit and research as part of clinical governance within the NHS Trust and have several publications in the surgical literature.
I am recognised by all the major insurance companies and, for self-funding patients, a package price for treatment can be provided on request.
