Background Information
Professional profile:

I graduated with honours from Sheffield University Medical School in 2001. After a period of surgical training in Sheffield, I moved to West Yorkshire and was appointed to the Yorkshire Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Programme based out of Leeds. I obtained my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr & Orth) examination on my first attempt in 2011 and was admitted onto the Specialist Register in 2013. At the end of my general orthopaedic training in Yorkshire, I undertook a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine, gaining in depth knowledge about the athlete and best treatments for their injuries. This earned me the qualification DipSEM(UK).

During 2013 I lived in Annecy in the French Alps and undertook a 12 month period of specialist training (fellowship) with world-renowned surgeon, Dr Laurent Lafosse. There I learnt first-hand the best and most modern techniques to treat shoulder and elbow problems. Whilst in France I also spent time with Dr Gilles Walch in Lyon, who is widely regarded as the modern-day master of the open Latarjet procedure. Further upper limb experience was gained when I spent a month in Boston with Dr JP Warner at Massachusetts General Hospital. MGH was voted the number one hospital facility in the United States in 2012 by the U.S. News & World Report. Dr JP Warner is a shoulder specialist focussing particularly on revision (second time) joint replacement and tendon/muscle transfers for rotator cuff deficiencies.  On returning to the UK, I benefitted greatly from working in Leeds as Fellow to Mr Roger Hackney, Consultant Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Surgeon.

I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in June 2014. There I had a general trauma practice but on the planned care side I offer a comprehensive shoulder and elbow service. I adopt a pragmatic approach to problem solving, tailor the solution to the individual and ensure the patient understands and can influence their treatment journey wherever possible. I am keen to explore all options regarding a patient’s treatment, offering both non-operative and operative therapies where appropriate. My elective practice includes all arthroplasty (joint replacement) and arthroscopy (key-hole) surgery to the shoulder and elbow. In particular I offer both anatomic (traditional) and reverse polarity shoulder replacements. On the arthroscopic side I am a specialist in rotator cuff surgery and instability treatments, including the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure.  I also offer open surgery for conditions around the elbow such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and ulnar nerve entrapment.

I was invited as faculty on many regional and national courses and am involved in the training of trainee surgeons in the Yorkshire region. I am actively involved in audit and research as part of clinical governance within the NHS Trust and have several publications in the surgical literature.

I am recognised by all the major insurance companies and, for self-funding patients, a package price for treatment can be provided on request.

Personal profile:

I grew up in the North-West of England and my passion for the outdoors drew me to Yorkshire. I now live locally and have a busy home life with my wife and two small children. I enjoy spending time with my family and (almost!) any outdoor sport, but preferably combining the two.

I enjoy mountain and road biking and feel the Tour de France visiting Yorkshire was the most incredible spectacle modern day Yorkshire has ever seen. As well as cycling I love running, kayaking and skiing. In the last decade I have focussed on endurance sports and competitions including the OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) and Adventure Racing. This involves teams of 2 performing multiple outdoor sports normally for a prolonged period / through the night, all in aid of great experiences in amazing surroundings, of which we have many in Yorkshire and the UK. Sometimes these are only retrospectively enjoyable of course! My love for sport and the outdoors means that I have the upmost sympathy for injured sportsmen and women and aim to treat all patients with the aim of reinstating their pre-injury activity level.
