Spire Elland Hospital is well recognised in the local area for performing complex spinal procedures, treating patients with osteoporosis, and vertebral compression fractures. We are one of the few private hospitals outside London to offer vertebroplasty, Kyphoplasty and X-stop PK™procedures.
Complex spinal surgery offered locally at Spire Elland Hospital
Complex spinal surgery is a well renowned specialty here at Elland Hospital and our surgeons have many years of experience in performing both symptom relieving and curative complex surgery for many spinal conditions.
Vertebroplasty
This procedure introduces special bone cement into the spinal vertebrae through a catheter (thin wire). It is generally suitable for patients who have been diagnosed with severe painful osteoporosis and vertebral compression fractures resulting from osteoporosis or spinal tumours. Vertebroplasty takes place under local anaesthetic with x-ray control.
Kyphoplasty
Kyphoplasty uses a catheter to introduce two balloon-like devices into the vertebrae under local anaesthetic. The balloons are swiftly inflated until the normal height of the vertebral body is restored, or in severe cases until the balloons reach their maximum volume. The balloons are then deflated and the cavity created is filled with cement under low pressure. This procedure may be suitable for patients with vertebral compression fractures. This type of fracture occurs in the elderly, but can also be associated with other factors such as chronic steroid usage, malignancy in the vertebrae or more rarely, haemangioma.
X STOP PK™
This procedure involves a device that can be used to treat degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS), a common back condition that can often be a significant caused of referred leg pain.
The X-stop device is a clinically proven, highly effective option for patients living with lumbar spinal stenosis, many of whom can find the most ordinary day-to-day tasks unbearable. The procedure is also 'minimally invasive' and is an alternative to the more traditional, complex open spinal surgery. For more information about x-stop visit the manufacturer's website: www.sfmt.com
All three procedures have been reviewed by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence), and are recognised by the major insurance groups. Suitable patients with private medical insurance simply need authorisation from their insurer. For patients without insurance we offer self-funding packages.
