Prostate surgery at Spire Elland Hospital

We offer transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for prostate surgery. This involves:

• A thin, tube-like telescope called a resectoscope is put into the opening of your penis and through your urethra
• A small, electrically-heated wire at the top of the resectoscope is used to trim small pieces of prostate tissue
• No stitches or dressings are required afterwards
• Performed under general anaesthetic meaning you’re asleep
• A urinary catheter (a thin, sterile tube) will be inserted for around one to three days after the operation to allow urine to flow freely

Your consultation

You’ll meet your chosen consultant in one of our private consultation rooms. They’ll discuss:

• Your symptoms and any particular urinary problems you’re having
• What the treatment options are, including alternatives to surgery such as medication and lifestyle changes
• Whether you need any tests or scans to help your consultant plan the next steps
• The potential benefits and risks of treatment

You will also need a pre-operative assessment with one of our specialist nurses to check if the procedure is right for you.

The procedure takes around one to three hours. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your private room while you have your operation.

You’ll usually need at least an overnight stay – most patients stay for one to three nights. You’ll have one of our private, en-suite rooms, which all have:

• TV/radio
• En-suite
• Window
• Armchair
• Wardrobe

After your procedure, you may have a urinary catheter in place to help you pass urine. This is because your urethra will be swollen following surgery, which can make urinating difficult. It will be taken out when you’re ready to leave hospital.

As expected after surgery, you may feel some pain afterwards. Our nurses will help you manage this by giving you painkillers and advice about what over-the-counter medicines you can take after you leave hospital.
