New Treatment for age related macular degeneration at Spire Elland Hospital

Spire Elland Hospital has launched a new treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration - the IOL-VIP system (intra-ocular lens for visually impaired people).

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in people over the age of 55 in the UK.

The macular (the central area of retina responsible for reading and detailed vision) is susceptible to degeneration as we age. Although mild AMD causes few symptoms, progression leads to devastating central visual loss - restricting a person's ability to read, drive and recognise faces.

There are two main forms of AMD - wet and dry.  About 90% of people have the dry form of the disease.  Historically there has been no effective treatment for most of these patients however the new IOL-VIP treatment can significantly improve central vision.

The procedure involves standard cataract extraction, followed by the implantation of two high power intraocular lenses, one behind and one in front of the iris.  Together these lenses act like a telescope, slightly magnifying the image and diverting it to a healthier part of the retina.  The healthy retina takes over the role of the macular and can give considerably improved vision.

At Spire Elland, the service is offered by Consultant Ophthalmologists  Mr T James and Mr S Rehman. For further information, or to book an appointment, call 01422 324065 or email cservice-el@spirehealthcare.com or complete the online enquiry form.
