Mr Burns undertook his surgical training based in Edinburgh. This included two years doing research into arterial disease and a year’s fellowship in Sydney, Australia where he received advanced training in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of vascular disease.
He was appointed as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh in 2009.
Mr Burns undertakes all aspects of vascular surgery. He has extensive experience in the management of varicose veins, including radiofrequency ablation, open surgery and foam sclerotherapy. Mr Burns is one of the specialist team, based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, which manages complex aortic aneurysms for the whole of Scotland. In addition, he has helped implement the use of Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) in Edinburgh – a newer, less invasive method of treating abdominal aortic aneurysms. His other areas of expertise are in carotid artery surgery, lower limb bypass surgery and the formation of fistulae for haemodialysis access.
Mr Burns plays a leading role in the education of junior surgeons, running both practical and online vascular surgical courses.
