St Bernard's Football Club given life-saving equipment

Following the 'Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Strategy' recently launched in Scotland, St Bernard's Football Team from Dalkeith were keen to furnish their training grounds with a defibrillator in case of any cardiac emergency both on the pitch and off.

They started fund raising in 2014 and approached Spire Shawfair Park Hospital, which has a large state of the art cardiology unit, to help acquire the defibrillator. They were thrilled when Spire decided to support the fledgling club and donate the defibrillator to the club.

Hospital Director Andrew Eadsforth said: "We’re delighted to support this cause. There are some great synergies between this project and our own aims to promote health through sport and providing treatment when needed and so we had no hesitation in helping St Bernard's."

To make the handover more fun, the boys took part in a training session given by physio lead at Spire Shawfair, Michael McBride, who is also physiotherapist for Team Scotland and St Johnstone. The boys were really put through their paces with a prematch training session and a few aches and pains were felt the next day.

One of St Bernard's coaches, David Inglis, had the tables turned on him by the boys as he was given a turn on the new Alter G antigravity treadmill, designed to improve fitness and support injury rehabilitation.

Coach Kevin Waugh said, "It has been a great initiative for the boys not only to have the peace of mind of a pitch-side defibrillator but also to be able to have top level training in such an amazing facility. Hopefully this will inspire the boys to greater things."

St Bernard's was started by Kevin in 2014, based at Ironmills Park, with the sole focus to develop young footballers. They have over 60 children in five different teams from 2003's to 2010's and always looking for fresh talent, should you have your own budding Beckham at home, see #playthestbernardsway on Facebook.
