Dr Christoper W.H. Davies MD FRCP

  • Dr Chris Davies grew up in Worcestershire and went to Kings School, Worcester and then Medical School at the University of Birmingham from 1985 to 1990. He subsequently worked in the West Midlands and Oxford Deanery before embarking on a career in respiratory medicine. He completed his specialist training in 1999 after working at High Wycombe, Banbury, the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford. During this time he completed a postgraduate doctorate (MD) on work around pneumonia and pleural infection and disease, and produced studies about the cardiovascular risks of obstructive sleep apnoea.

    He was appointed as Consultant Physician in Reading in 1999 and is now the senior clinician in the Department of Respiratory Medicine in the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. He was the Clinical Director for Acute Medicine at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust between 2004 and 2007. He has been the Training Programme Director responsible for training in Respiratory Medicine for the Oxford Deanery between 2006 and 2011, a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Respiratory Medicine at the Joint Royal Colleges Postgraduate Training Board (JRCPTB) 2007-2011, and continues as the Regional Specialty Adviser for Oxford Deanery in Respiratory Medicine. He received his Fellowship of the Royal Colleges (FRCP) in 2004.

    He is also now the Director of Core Medical Training for the Oxford Deanery, and is responsible for the recruitment, organisation and assessment of over 80 trainees as they approach their higher specialty training. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the School of Medicine for Oxford Deanery.

    Dr Davies lives in South Oxfordshire with his wife and two boys. He enjoys many activities including road cycling and skiing.

    Publications and Research

    Dr Davies has been a member of the British Thoracic Society since 1994 and was a co-author of the BTS Pleural Guidelines published in 2004, and revised guidelines from 2010. His main sub-specialty interests are sleep related breathing disorders, pleural disease and pulmonary embolic disease. He is actively involved with all other aspects of respiratory medicine, especially asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and suspected lung cancer. In addition Dr Davies is accredited in General Internal Medicine (GIM). He is registered on the Specialist Register at the GMC.

    Dr Davies has been actively involved in research throughout his career and has published over 30 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters including the Oxford Desktop of Respiratory Medicine and the Oxford Desktop of Geriatric Medicine.
