Nose re-shaping surgery (rhinoplasty or 'nose job')

The size and shape of your nose are genetic and it develops into its final shape in your adolescent years. However many people become unhappy with how their nose develops and feel that it does not suit their face.  Nose re-shaping, commonly known as a 'nose job', is one of the most common cosmetic procedures but the changes requested by each patient are always different and personal.  Some people seek nose re-shaping surgery after an injury just to restore their previous looks.  As you can see from the before and after pictures here, a nose re-shaping operation can make a dramatic impact on how you look.

Nose re-shaping, known as rhinoplasty, is an operation which can change the size and shape of your nose. Your nose is re-shaped by removing and re-positioning the underlying bone and cartilage.  If your nose is very flat, your surgeon may use an implant to build up the size of the nose (this is known as augmentation rhinoplasty). Sometimes the nostrils are also re-shaped to fit with the shape of your new nose.  A 'nose job' (rhinoplasty operation) involves your surgeon making cuts through the nostrils so that visible scarring is avoided wherever possible.  Nose re-shaping is not recommended for you if you are 16 or younger, because your nose may still be growing.

Nose re-shaping is performed under a general anaesthetic and you'll usually need to stay in hospital overnight.

Following nose re-shaping you will experience bruising and swelling around your eyes for a few weeks, and you will need to wear a splint on your nose for some of this time. Your consultant surgeon will discuss this with you prior to your operation.

All operations carry risks as well as benefits. The chance of complications following rhinoplasty depends on the type of operation and other factors such as your general health. Your consultant surgeon will explain how the risks apply to you.
