Varicose veins are swollen veins (usually on the legs) that look lumpy and bluish through the skin. The veins can become unsightly and may deter you from wearing clothes that you'd like. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins become weak, allowing blood to collect in the leg veins instead of travelling back to the heart. There are a number of options for removing varicose veins and restoring a smoother appearance to your legs.
The most common varicose vein treatment is an operation called ligation and stripping where your surgeon makes a small cut in your groin at the top of the main affected vein. This vein is tied off (ligation) and then carefully removed through the cut (stripping). The surgeon may also remove individual smaller veins using small cuts along the leg.
You may sometimes need to stay in hospital overnight after ligation and stripping. Your legs will be tightly bandaged and you may need to wear pressure stockings for one or two weeks, depending on your consultant surgeon's advice. You'll also need to plan time off work so that you avoid strenuous exercise, and any lifting or carrying for several days after your operation. However, your consultant surgeon will advise you how long it will be until you can return to your normal activities. You should also refrain from driving until you are confident that you can perform an emergency stop without discomfort (this will probably be at least one week).
Other options for treating varicose veins include:
- sclerotherapy - a chemical solution is injected into small veins
- microwave treatment - a fine tube is inserted into the veins and microwave heat is used to shrink them
- EVLT (endovenous laser treatment) - a fine tube is inserted into the veins and laser light is used to shrink them.
These other treatments are now becoming more common and your consultant surgeon will discuss the treatment thats most suitable for you.
All operations carry risks as well as benefits. The chance of complications following varicose vein treatment depends on the type of operation and other factors such as your general health. Your consultant surgeon will explain how the risks apply to you.
