Ear pinning

Ear pinning (otoplasty or pinnaplasty) is an operation to make your ears lie closer to your head, making them less prominent. The operation is often performed on children (after the age of five), but can be performed on any age group.

The operation can be performed under local anaesthetic but a general anaesthetic is also an option, especially for young children. The surgeon makes small cuts behind each ear to expose the cartilage and reshapes it so the ear lies closer to the side of the head. They may also remove some skin and fold the cartilage back on itself and use stitches to hold the ear in position.

Stitches used to close the cuts in the skin will need to be removed about five to ten days after surgery unless dissolvable stitches are used, which will need to be removed.

A bandage will be wrapped around your head and over both ears and should be kept on for two weeks to protect your ears and keep them in position while they heal. You should be able to wash your hair about two weeks after the operation and take activities like swimming after four weeks.

Your ears will be tender for a few weeks after the operation and may feel a little numb. There will be slight scarring behind the ear but this will fade over time. The consultant will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with this type of procedure and it is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
