Thread veins

Thread veins become visible as we age and in men, it is quite common in those that work outdoors. Thread veins are most visible on the cheeks, nose and legs and have a red or purplish colour as they show through the skin.

There are many different treatments that can be used successfully and do not require an overnight hospital stay or general anaesthetic. One technique is sclerotherapy, in which a chemical is inserted into the vein using a very fine needle. This makes the walls of the veins stick together and makes them gradually disperse.

Thread veins on the face are usually treated by laser treatment. As the veins absorb the laser light, they are destroyed. However, this treatment may not be suitable for people with darker skin as it may cause uneven coloration to the skin. Other treatments for thread veins include high-intensity light treatment, which uses pulses of intense light and VeinwaveTM, a treatment that uses a fine, heated needle.

Your specialist will advise you on the best treatment for you although it may be necessary to perform more than one technique to achieve the results you want. Following treatment, the veins may look more prominent than before treatment but this will fade over the following eight weeks.

The consultant will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with this type of procedure and it is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
