Tattoo removal

There are now plenty of ways to remove tattoos and the best method for you will depend on the type and colour of your tattoo. Most commonly, darker colours such as black and blue are more difficult to remove but some modern pastel-coloured inks can also be hard to break down.

Laser treatment is the most common method of removal. Different wavelengths of light are used for different pigments. The laser beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by the ink. This causes the ink to break down so that it can be removed by the body's lymphatic system. Lasers can cause an uneven colour in brown and black skins, so the treatment may not be suitable for people with these skin types.

If the tattoo is too deep for laser treatment, or is quite small in size, the skin with the pigment can be cut away and the edges sewn together to close the wound. Dermabrasion, a method where the top layers of tattooed skin are 'sanded' off and dressings are used to help absorb the ink, is another option.

The treatment is usually done in one day and an overnight stay is not normally necessary, although you may have a general anaesthetic if you have a surgical treatment. It may not always be possible to remove all the traces of ink from your skin and you may need repeat treatments. There is also likely to be some scarring whatever method you use.

The consultant will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with the type of procedure most suitable for you. It is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
