Our face often shows the ravages of time. Factors such as the sun, acne and our lifestyle can affect the skin's texture and make it look dull and rough. A process such as dermabrasion, which removes the top layer of the skin, can help it to look smoother and healthier.
During the procedure, the specialist will remove the top layer of skin by 'sanding' it off. When your new skin grows back, it will have fewer irregularities and a smoother appearance. The treatment cannot be used on active acne or bad skin burns or if you have had any radiation treatments or a chemical peel.
Following your treatment, your skin will be bloody and crusted. It will be very sensitive and swollen for several weeks. You will not be able to do contact sports as well as swimming for about four to six weeks. You will also have to wear sunblock for six to twelve months following treatment and until your skin returns to its normal colour.
Although scarring with dermabrasion is rare, people with dark complexions may develop permanently discoloured or blotchy skin. The specialist will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with this type of procedure and it is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
