If you find that no matter how much you exercise, your calf muscles are not quite as pronounced as you would like, calf implants may be the solution for you. Sometimes exercise alone can't help you get the shape you want. Calf implants can create fullness in the lower leg and help you obtain the proportions you're after.
Calf implants create a more muscular appearance, through the insertion of a silicon implant on top of the calf muscle. The procedure changes the shape of your calf, increasing its bulkiness and mass.
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will cut along a crease line at the back of your knee and insert a silicone implant through the cut, placing it carefully on the top of your muscle. There will be a scar where the cut is made at the back of the knee, but usually this is barely noticeable.
You should expect to take it easy for the week following the operation and your surgeon will advise you on what exercise to take. Your calves will be bandaged following surgery and bruising will occur around the affected area. For the first couple of days you will need to keep your legs raised as much as possible to help reduce swelling. After a few days you will need to walk around to allow your calf muscles to get used to the implants. Your legs may feel stiff for a few weeks following surgery.
You should be able to return to full normal activities between four to six weeks following surgery, but you should follow your surgeon's advice regarding physical activity immediately after surgery. The consultant will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with this type of procedure and it is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
