We note today’s final report from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in its inquiry into the private healthcare market. The recommendations include:
- measures to improve the public availability of information on consultant fees and of information on the performance of consultants and private hospitals;
- measures to ensure that arrangements between NHS trusts and private hospital operators to operate or manage a PPU will be capable of review by the new Competition and Markets Authority; and
- a restriction or ban on certain consultant benefit and incentive schemes.
We will work with the CMA to implement these recommendations in the most appropriate manner, while ensuring that we continue to provide patients with high quality of care.
With the conclusion of this period of regulatory instability behind us, we believe the outlook for UK private healthcare and Spire in particular is encouraging. As a sign of our continuing commitment to the private healthcare sector, since the start of the CMA inquiry (ie since April 2012), we have invested over £100 million in our hospitals.
