New premier hospital marks construction milestone in Tollerton

On Friday (15 January), key figures gathered at the site of the new Spire Nottingham Hospital in Tollerton to sign the final steel beam during the official topping out ceremony with main contractor, construction and infrastructure company, Morgan Sindall.

Topping out is a long-held tradition to commemorate the placement of the highest point atop a structure during its construction. Traditionally, a tree was brought to the roof of the building and construction workers would enjoy a pint of beer to mark the occasion. Now, it is a much more sober affair where workers typically sign the last girder and pose for a photograph.

After the ceremony, attendees were offered an exclusive preview of the new £60m hospital, which is due for completion at the end of the year.

Once opened, the new hospital will house three ultra-clean air theatres, one hybrid theatre designed for minimally-invasive surgery and cardiology, a minor surgery theatre, 54 patient beds, five-bed HDU/ITU, MRI and CT scanning facilities and will offer a full range of surgical and medical treatments.

Overseeing the monumental build is Will Pressley, who will serve as the new hospital’s director after serving as Hospital Director at Spire Regency Hospital in Macclesfield.

“Building a hospital from scratch whereby the structure and facilities are designed to meet and absorb the growing healthcare landscape is a rare and special opportunity for any hospital director”, says Will.

“We’re now at a really exciting phase of the project where we are starting to focus on the more interesting aspects of the build such as interior environment and, most importantly, recruitment. We are already attracting interest from the best clinicians in the area and we hope to cement these relationships in the coming weeks.”

Making sure that the project stays on track and meets Spire’s exacting standards is Spire’s development team, headed by Neil McCullough, Group Development Director.

“It seems like only yesterday that the BBC News Team covered the ground-breaking ceremony so it’s incredible to think that we’re at the momentous stage of topping out already”, says Neil.

“We have custom-built this hospital – down to the tiniest detail – to allow us to offer the very best in modern healthcare to our patients, staff and consultants within an outstanding environment.”

“It is always fulfilling to take any project to the topping out stage. It’s a key milestone in all building projects and we were very pleased to be able to celebrate it with the Spire Healthcare team here at Tollerton,” adds Peter Smyth, area director at Morgan Sindall.

“Spire Healthcare requires its buildings to perform in specific ways to enable it to provide excellent levels of care. We are privileged to be playing our part in helping make that provision a reality in the region.”

The new development will be equipped to undertake a significantly enhanced range of services, including highly complex surgery and medicine through a large Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) together with advanced diagnostic and imagery equipment.
