While many of us have been watching our television screens, supporting Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Andrew Perry, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Clare Park Hospital’s Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, near Farnham, has been providing medical cover to the sailors competing at Weymouth and Portland.
Andrew said “It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of a home Olympic Games and to see the huge organisation involved in making it such a great spectacle.” He continued “I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team based at the village where the sailors live and down at the water’s edge. You may not think there are a lot of injuries associated with sailing but many of them have pushed their bodies very hard over many months and absolutely give their all during the competition so we have all been kept quite busy! There are some truly inspiring stories of perseverance and determination. Some of the teams have their own medical back-up who we work with but many countries have no medical support at all other than what is provided by us.”
Andrew Perry, who qualified in 1992, specializes in hip and knee surgery including arthroscopic surgery, revision surgery, joint replacement and sports injuries. Andrew, who practises at Spire Clare Park Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, is married to teacher Rosie, with three children. His main interests when he finds the time to relax are spending time with his family and sailing and skiing.
