Professional profile:
Mr Paterson trained in Aberdeen and graduated with Distinction in Surgery and with the Keith Gold Medal in 1976. He did his early postgraduate training there and also completed work for his PhD thesis before moving to St. George's Hospital, London. He also spent a year as a Clinical Fellow in Hong Kong and was appointed as a consultant in 1991.

In addition to his clinical interests, he has been closely involved in surgical training. He has taught on surgical skills courses in Edinburgh, London and overseas. He is an examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a member of the SAC in General Surgery and was Programme Director for the South West Thames Registrar rotation from 1999-2004.
