    Graduated from Cambridge University and St Mary's Hospital Medical School. Trained in General Medicine and General Practice and was a GP in St Albans for 9 Years where he became increasingly interested in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. He joined the Army and trained in psychiatry before becoming a lecturer in Military Psychiatry at the Royal Army Medical College and became involved in research in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, its prevention and treatment. He commanded a Field Psychiatric Team in the Gulf War in 1991. He left the Army in 1996 where he was a Consultant at the Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot. He worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS in Guildford and Haslemere before his appointment as Medical Director to the Priory Hospital Woking in 2001.
