Ankle Arthritis

Osteoarthritis, or wear and tear, of the ankle is a common problem. It is more likely to occur if an individual has fractured their ankle in the past or has a family history of osteoarthritis, even in other joints.

Most patients will complain of an aching pain along the front of the ankle joint, which may be present at rest and at night if advanced.

Ways to reduce pain include losing weight as the ankle is a weight bearing joint, substituting high impact activities such as running with cycling or swimming, and wearing boots rather than shoes to offer more support to the ankle.
