Achilles Tendon Rupture
This is potentially a serious problem that should not be overlooked. It can happen to anyone, whether they are very active or not and tends to present with a sudden onset of pain at the back of the ankle, followed by weakness and difficulty in walking or running. Patients often feel as if they have been kicked or hit on the back of the ankle, and some describe a noise as it tears.
If a patient suspects that they may have ruptured their Achilles tendon they should go to A&E as a matter of urgency. Although clinical examination will often detect whether a rupture has occurred, an ultrasound scan may be performed to confirm clinical suspicion and ascertain the level of the rupture.
