Spire Cheshire Hospital is delighted to be the title sponsor of this year’s English Half Marathon which takes place in Warrington on Sunday 18 September.
Consultants and staff from the hospital are all getting involved and are busy preparing for the run so that they can raise money for their favourite charities.
Andy Eadsforth, Hospital Director, is running for Sarnelli House, a charity close to his heart, based in Northern Thailand. Andy said ‘ Sarnelli House is a charity that I have worked with and supported for over 5 years. It is made up of 6 orphanages in Nong Khai, Northern Thailand, for around 180 children - around 150 of whom have HIV/AIDS and the rest of whom have been orphaned by AIDS. The kids receive the medication they need, food, clothing, shelter and above all the love and attention from dedicated House Moms. There is a huge ignorance and stigma attached to HIV/AIDS in the largely uneducated and rural North of Thailand and many of these kids have been abandoned and left for dead by family, friends and villages who are afraid of the disease. The charity also does a lot of outreach work taking medication, food and other essentials to families in and around Northern Thailand who are affected by AIDS and ensuring that they get the treatment they need.
I go across to Thailand each year for 2 weeks to work at the Orphanage and spend the rest of the year raising money to send across - either through talks to local groups like church or rotary clubs, doing sponsored events (like the half marathon) or just collecting things like clothes to send across. I also sponsor 4 of the kids which involves sending money monthly to support sending them to school and paying for the medication they need. It also means sending birthday and Christmas presents. Next year I will be taking my 13 year old nephew who is interested in getting involved and so will be visiting with me in March.
I have never run a half marathon before so this is a first - in fact I have never run a race since school so this really is a first largely because I have had a knee problem for several years but with advice from the physios here and some new trainers I am now able to run almost pain free. My aim is to run in around 1hr 45 mins. I am in a personal race with Kate, the Finance Manager at Spire Cheshire Hospital who I am aiming to beat but who has been running for much longer than me.’
