Meniscal Transplant Surgery

Meniscal Transplant Surgery

Spire Cheshire is pleased to introduce another  innovative minimally invasive orthopaedic knee procedure - meniscal transplant (meniscal substituting) surgery, performed by consultant knee surgeon Mr Fahad Attar.

If you have had a previous meniscal (cartilage) tear and have had part of your meniscus removed and now have on going pain in the knee, you may be suitable to have a meniscal transplant.

Routinely performed:

  • To replace the lost meniscus (knee cartilage)
  • Through minimally invasive arthroscopic (key hole) surgery
  • To improve pain and function
  • To potentially delay the onset of arthritis
  • To potentially delay the need for any joint replacement surgery
  • Using a biological and completely absorbable implant or an allograft (whichever is most suitable in your case)

Patient experience of an ACL revision / meniscal allograft transplantation

Mr Garner had been experiencing problems with his left knee since 1995 when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) playing football. He felt that he was reaching the end of the road and that I was resigned to a life of inactivity, which at age 47 was something he was not really happy about. He decided to have a consultation with Mr Fahad Attar, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Cheshire Hospital

Mr Garner said: "Mr Attar initially undertook  a series of MRI scans and X-rays and then an arthroscopy of my knee and told me that there was very little left of my original ACL graft and that there was only third of my medial meniscus remaining following the various surgeries. He advised that if I did nothing then I was likely to require a knee replacement within two-three years but that he could put this off by 10-15 years by undertaking an ACL revision and a meniscal allograft.
