The Rapid Access Breast Clinic is based in the out-patients department at Spire Cheshire Hospital. The Diagnostic Imaging Department at the hospital has the facilities for performing mammograms and ultrasound scans.

The service

Women referred to the clinic will benefit from a consultation followed by a mammogram and ultrasound and where clinically indicated cyst aspiration** / biopsy**. This process can normally be completed within 2 hours. Following a cyst aspiration**, pathology results can normally be obtained within 24 hours.

The care

At Spire Cheshire Hospital we offer an enhanced breast care service. Our Breast Care Nurse Specialist works closely with the Consultant General Surgeon who is a specialist in breast surgery. The nurse is present during the patient consultation and is always available in clinics when patients are given their results, irrespective of whether the results are positive or negative. A Consultant Radiologist and specialist radiographer (mammographer) are present to carry out any imaging procedures that may be necessary e.g. mammography or ultrasound.

• Report any changes to your GP without delay
• Attend for routine breast screening if you are over 50

Look for:

• Change in size of your breast
• Changes in the shape of your breasts, eg flattening or swelling
• Dimpling of the skin (skin looks like the texture of orange peel)
• Change in the position of the nipple, eg newly inverted (turned-in) nipple
• Any discharge from the nipple (unless you are breast feeding and it’s milky discharge)
• A rash or crusting on the nipple or surrounding area
• Swelling or a lump in the breast or armpit
• Veins which stand out more than usual
• Any changes in sensation, especially if in one breast only
• Constant pain in part of the breast or armpit

Report anything that looks or feels different to your GP or nurse as soon as possible
