Vestibular imbalance results in a wide range of symptoms. Patients initially present with acute dizziness often with related nausea and vomiting and as this settles patients are often left with feelings of imbalance which many describe as feeling that they are "viewing life through a goldfish bowl" or that they are "out of synch" with their surroundings. Vestibular imbalance places extra demand on the visual-occular system thus meaning that patients struggle to concentrate when reading or using computers and often complain of fatigue and eye irritation.
Physiotherapists at Spire Cheshire Hospital are able to comprehensively assess patients in order to diagnose BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) which responds well to treatment with Epley manoeuvre or to diagnose other vestibular pathologies such as unilateral or bilateral vestibular loss or labyrinthitis. These conditions respond well to a tailored programme of excercises which bring about adaptation to vestibular loss and decrease the over use of the visual ocular system thus allowing the patients to increase function and return to normal activities
